If you live in the United States, then chances are you’re a sports fan. But did you know that your favorite sports all have weirdly diverse backgrounds? Here are some fun sports trivia facts about baseball, lacrosse, and tennis, so read on to see what you didn’t know about your favorite sport!

Baseball

Baseball Sports Trivia Facts: Known as ‘America’s pastime,’ this sport first came to popularity with the first game in 1846, invented by Abner Doubleday of New York. Some events that have come to shape the history of the sport include:

  • The invention of the first ever professional baseball league in 1876.
  • The Cleveland Indians were the first big league team to have numbered baseball team uniforms in 1916.
  • The price for a baseball ticket in 1920 came to an extravagant $1.00.
  • Spring training started in the 1940’s, when the Boston Red Sox, the Cincinnati Reds, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the New York Highlanders (now the Yankees) all went to Hot Spring, Arkansas, to train for the upcoming season.
  • Babe Ruth, a famous New York Yankee, would wear a wet cabbage leaf under his hat to keep himself cool.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse Trivia Facts: Lacrosse is the fastest sport played on two feet. Played nationwide by over 250,000 players, this game has its origins with the Native Americans as far back as the 1700’s. It also boasts:

  • This sport was originally invented to help Native American men increase their spiritual and physical strengths to prepare them for war.
  • Even though it has an old history, the National Lacrosse League was not founded until 1986.
  • Lacrosse is the national summer sport of Canada.
  • It is the fastest growing youth sport nationwide. So if you notice an abundance of kids in lacrosse team uniforms, now you know why!

Tennis

Tennis Trivia Facts: This British game came to the global scene as lawn tennis in the late 19th century. Since then, the sport has brought enjoyment to men and women of all ages. Did you know that:

  • This Olympic sport boasts over 75 million players worldwide.
  • The oldest tennis tournament, Wimbledon, requires all players to wear white athletic apparel and/or athletic uniforms. This is one of the only matches worldwide with a dress code.
  • A tennis ball used to be made of leather stuffed with wool or hair. The yellow balls we know today did not come to be until 1986.
  • Before the use of rackets, tennis players would use their open palms to hit the ball back and forth!
