Spain’s World Cup Team
Five weeks ago, most of the world had never had a reason to type “Chattanooga” and “World Cup” into the same sentence. This Sunday, they will. Spain, the top-ranked team in the world and reigning European champions, chose Chattanooga as their World Cup base camp, training just up the road at Baylor School. Now “La Roja” is playing Argentina in the 2026 World Cup Final, and Chattanooga gets to say it was part of the story.
Here’s how a quiet Tennessee city ended up in Spain’s game plan, some of the fun details from their stay, and why this run is the perfect excuse to get your own soccer team looking sharp.
Why Spain Picked Chattanooga
With the 2026 World Cup spread across 16 cities in three countries, national teams needed a home base for the group stage, somewhere with good training facilities, privacy, and easy travel to their group matches. Spain’s federation evaluated several cities before landing on Chattanooga, splitting the difference between Atlanta, where two of their three group games were played, and a small-city environment away from the spotlight.
Spain settled into the Embassy Suites downtown and used Baylor School as their training center starting in early June. They weren’t the only ones thinking this way, either. Croatia and a couple of other national teams made the same call, choosing quiet high school campuses over big-city training centers.
Fun Facts From Spain’s Chattanooga Stay
- Fans packed Baylor’s campus. Spain held open training sessions that let local fans watch the reigning European champions run drills up close, something you’d normally have to fly to Madrid for.
- Lamine Yamal went to Walmart. The 18-year-old superstar, worth an estimated $400 million and followed by nearly 90 million people across social media, reportedly shopped at a local Walmart without a security detail in sight, something that basically never happens to him anywhere else in the world.
- A hotel elevator had a message for the team. Staff at the Embassy Suites downtown posted a simple note inside the elevator for the players: “Disfruta cada momento de este viaje,” Spanish for “enjoy every moment of this trip.”
- Chattanooga got a plaque and a key to the city. By the time Spain wrapped up their group stage stay, Mayor Tim Kelly had presented the team with a key to the city to mark the connection.
Spain’s Road to the Final
Spain’s group stage run out of Atlanta didn’t exactly start with fireworks, they were held to a scoreless draw by tournament debutants Cape Verde before finding their rhythm. From there, the wins piled up fast:
- Draw vs. Cape Verde, 0-0
- Win vs. Saudi Arabia, 4-0
- Win vs. Uruguay, 1-0
- Round of 32: Win vs. Austria, 3-0
- Round of 16: Win vs. Portugal, 1-0
- Quarterfinal: Win vs. Belgium, 2-1
- Semifinal: Win vs. France, 2-0
That run sets up a championship match against Lionel Messi and defending champion Argentina this Sunday, July 19, at 3 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Spain is chasing their second World Cup title; Argentina is chasing back-to-back championships. Either way, a team that trained less than a half hour from our shop is 90 minutes away from lifting the trophy.
What This Means for Soccer in Chattanooga
Big moments like this tend to spark something local. Every four years, World Cup runs get kids begging their parents for a ball and a pair of cleats, and this time it happened in our own backyard. Combine that with Chattanooga’s already-growing soccer scene, from Chattanooga FC to youth leagues across the city, and it’s a good bet that rec teams, travel clubs, and school programs are about to see a wave of new interest this fall.
If your club, league, or school team is riding that wave, now’s a good time to make sure your gear matches the moment.
